Bryan S. Kim is Professor and current Chair of the Division of Social Sciences at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, where he has been a faculty member since 2006. Previously serving as Director of the MA Program in Counseling Psychology from 2008 to 2020, Dr. Kim holds a Ph.D. in Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology with emphasis in Counseling Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara (2000), an M.Ed. in School Counseling from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (1995), and a B.Ed. in Secondary Science Education from the same institution (1992). He is also a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (MHC196) in the State of Hawaiʻi.
Dr. Kim's research program focuses on multicultural counseling process and outcome, measurement of cultural constructs, counselor education and supervision, and immigrant experiences. His work particularly examines the effects of culture-specific counseling interventions and client enculturation/acculturation on counseling process and outcome. His interest in multicultural counseling psychology stems from his experiences growing up in Hawai'i as a 1.5-generation Asian American. His research has evolved from foundational work on the Asian Values Scale to more complex investigations of cultural value discrepancies within families and their impact on mental health outcomes.
Over his distinguished career, Dr. Kim has published 100 publications including 9 psychological instruments and delivered over 110 presentations. His recent scholarship demonstrates continued innovation in cultural assessment tools while expanding into emerging areas like pandemic-related mental health impacts on college students. His work consistently bridges theoretical understanding with practical applications for culturally responsive counseling.

His editorial leadership extends across multiple major journals in counseling psychology, reflecting his substantial influence on the field's scholarly discourse. As Chair of the Division of Social Sciences, he provides academic leadership across multiple disciplines while maintaining his active research program and clinical expertise.
