Bryan Fanning is UCD's Professor of Migration and Social Policy at the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice, University College Dublin. He holds the position of Full Professor and has been actively involved in teaching and research for many years, with teaching activities documented through 2025.
Professor Fanning's research interests center on migration studies, the intellectual history of social policy, and the modernization of Irish society. His work explores how different understandings of moral issues influence social policy thinking, with particular focus on Ireland's experiences with immigration in comparative contexts, social policy issues relating to diversity, and the experiences of marginalized communities. He has written several significant books including 'Histories of the Irish Future' (2014), 'Migration and the Making of Ireland' (2018), and 'Public Morality and the Culture Wars: The Triple Divide' (2023).
His scholarly output demonstrates consistent engagement with themes of migration, social policy, urban development, and Irish society. His recent publications reveal a strong focus on comparative migration studies, particularly examining Polish migration to Ireland and the UK, racism and anti-racism across the two Irelands, and urban policy responses to social unrest.
Professor Fanning actively supervises doctoral research and welcomes proposals on migration, social policy, and ideological conflicts about public morality. His teaching interests emphasize developing transferable analytical skills within specialized study of social policy.
He is involved in numerous professional activities including membership on the Board of University College Dublin Press, the International Centre for Newman Studies, and the Integration Monitoring Steering Platform (Department of Justice). He also serves as a Trustee for Holocaust Education Trust Ireland and participates in the Migration and Citizenship Research Initiative at UCD.
