Bryan Bryson is the Phillip and Susan Ragon Career Development Professor in the Department of Biological Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research focuses on engineering the host-pathogen interface, with particular emphasis on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis. He leads the Bryson Lab, which combines new technologies with classical approaches to manipulate the immune system for improved bacterial control.
Dr. Bryson obtained his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and PhD in biological engineering at MIT. He then completed postdoctoral training with Sarah Fortune at the Harvard School of Public Health, where he developed his interest in leveraging biological engineering approaches to understand tuberculosis pathogenesis. Recently, he was granted tenure at MIT, marking a significant milestone in his academic career.
Dr. Bryson's research spans systems immunology, innate immunity, vaccine development, computational biology, and host-pathogen interactions. His lab has made significant contributions to understanding tuberculosis infection heterogeneity and developing new tools to dissect bacterial infection dynamics. A major focus of his work is immunopeptidomics - studying how pathogen-derived peptides are presented by the immune system - which has direct applications for vaccine development against tuberculosis and other infectious diseases. His lab recently developed PathMHC, a novel workflow for identifying pathogen-specific peptides that could serve as targets for T cell priming vaccines.
Dr. Bryson's scientific contributions have been recognized through his appointment as the Phillip and Susan Ragon Career Development Professor, a prestigious named position at MIT. His research has resulted in numerous publications in high-impact journals, with a recent focus on tuberculosis immunology, vaccine development, and computational approaches to understanding host-pathogen interactions.
As an educator, Dr. Bryson teaches courses 20.200, 20.440, and 20.S940 in MIT's Department of Biological Engineering. His teaching likely reflects his research interests in biological engineering approaches to infectious disease.
Dr. Bryson actively engages with the scientific community through social media, particularly on Bluesky, where he shares updates on his lab's research, discusses scientific topics with colleagues, and connects with researchers in tuberculosis, immunology, and related fields. His lab, the Bryson Lab, appears to have several members including Diane Ballestas who is listed with contact information.
