Bruno Estigarribia is a Professor and Department Chair in the Spanish Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research focuses on the structure of Paraguayan Guarani and Argentinian Spanish, with a particular emphasis on language contact phenomena between these languages. He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Stanford University (2007) and multiple advanced degrees in Language Sciences from Université Paris V, including a Maîtrise (2001), Licence (2000), and DEUG (1999).
Estigarribia’s work bridges theoretical linguistics with sociolinguistic and computational approaches. He explores syntax, semantics, and morphosyntax, particularly in multilingual contexts. Notable contributions include his 2020 A Reference Grammar of Paraguayan Guarani and studies on clitic doubling in Rioplatense Spanish. He has received prestigious awards, including the NEH Fellowship (2018) and Schwab Academic Excellence Award (2019).
His teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses such as Introduction to Hispanic Linguistics and Guarani Linguistics. He actively engages in fieldwork in Paraguay and employs innovative methods like web-based data analysis to study language contact and code-switching.
