Bruno Carvalho

Bruno Carvalho is an Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Cultures at Princeton University. He previously served as a Principal Investigator (2015–2017) and co-directed the Princeton-Mellon Initiative in Architecture, Urbanism & the Humanities. His affiliations span multiple departments and programs, including African American Studies, Comparative Literature, the Princeton Environmental Institute, Latin American Studies, and Urban Studies, with a strong association to the School of Architecture.

Research Interests: Carvalho’s work bridges literature, culture, and the built environment in Latin American and Iberian contexts, focusing on Brazil. He explores intersections of poetry, film, architecture, cartography, city planning, environmental justice, and race, with a particular emphasis on historical and contemporary urban dynamics in Rio de Janeiro and Luso-Brazilian eighteenth-century studies.

Publications and Trends: His scholarship includes monographs like Porous City (2013) and edited volumes such as Occupy All Streets (2016). His research trends highlight interdisciplinary approaches to urbanism, postcolonial studies, and environmental humanities, often integrating historical analysis with contemporary socio-political critiques.
