Dr. Bruce W. Dayton serves as Chair and Associate Professor at the SIT Graduate Institute, where he leads the PhD in International Relations program and the Global MA in Diplomacy and International Relations program. With over 25 years of professional experience in peacebuilding and conflict transformation as a practitioner, researcher, and educator, Dr. Dayton has established himself as a leading figure in international relations scholarship and practice. He has been actively contributing to SIT since 2015, bringing extensive expertise in global conflict resolution and international cooperation to his academic leadership roles.
Dr. Dayton's academic journey includes:
- PhD in Political Science from Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University (1999)
- MA in Political Science from University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1990)
- BA in Political Science from Ithaca College (1985)
Dr. Dayton's research centers on what he identifies as "the problem of order" in international politics—how sovereign nation-states can cooperate to address global challenges amid the transition from a unipolar to a multi-polar world. His work examines the nature of war, conflict emergence and escalation, de-escalation strategies, and the critical management of refugee and forced migration flows. He approaches these complex issues through experiential learning methodologies that combine theoretical content with active experimentation through role-plays, simulations, and professional interviews to develop practical skills in negotiation, mediation, and dialogue.
Dr. Dayton's scholarly contributions demonstrate a consistent evolution from foundational crisis management frameworks in the early 2000s to contemporary approaches to sustainable peacebuilding and collaborative conflict resolution. His publications reveal a deepening focus on intractable conflicts, identity-based tensions, and the transformative role of intermediaries in peace processes. His interdisciplinary work bridges political science, psychology, and communication studies to develop comprehensive frameworks for understanding and transforming conflicts across cultural and geopolitical contexts.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Dayton has held significant academic and professional positions:
- Chair of PhD in International Relations and Global MA in Diplomacy and International Relations at SIT Graduate Institute (2015-present)
- Associate Director of the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs at Syracuse University
