Bruce G. Hatcher is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Cape Breton University (CBU). He holds the University Chair in Marine Ecosystem Research and serves as Director of the Bras d’Or Institute. His research focuses on Marine Ecology, Oceanography, and Climate Change Adaptation, with expertise in coastal anoxic basins, marine protected areas (MPAs), and coral reef ecosystems.
Dr. Hatcher’s work integrates biogeochemical processes, ecological connectivity, and anthropogenic impacts. Notable projects include studying the Bras d’Or Lake system’s oxygen dynamics, modeling MPA effectiveness in Canadian waters, and assessing fisheries management in Caribbean ecosystems. His interdisciplinary approach often combines field observations with numerical modeling to address environmental challenges.
He has contributed to initiatives like the Soufriere Experiment in Reef Fisheries Sustainability and the Sydney Harbour Atlas. His research emphasizes practical applications for conservation, such as optimizing MPA design and understanding climate change impacts on marine biodiversity.
Dr. Hatcher’s publications span over three decades, reflecting his sustained contributions to marine science. He collaborates internationally, addressing global issues like coral reef health, sediment dynamics, and sustainable fisheries practices.
