Bruce Ernest Logan is the Evan Pugh University Professor and Kappe Professor of Environmental Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, serving as Director of the Institute of Energy and the Environment (IEE). His work bridges renewable energy, water infrastructure sustainability, and the water-energy-food-climate nexus.
Dr. Logan’s research spans
- bioelectricity generation via microbial fuel cells
- green hydrogen production using microbial electrolysis cells and water electrolyzers
- thermal batteries for energy storage
- carbon footprint analysis in water systems
Recent publications highlight advancements in membrane-free electrolyzers, ion transport optimization, and resource recovery from wastewater. His work emphasizes scalable solutions for rural disinfection, phosphorus recycling, and salinity gradient energy capture via reverse electrodialysis.
Dr. Logan’s projects include NSF-funded initiatives on
- membrane science (2019–2026)
- Navy collaboration on microbial fuel cell monitoring
- 2024 workshops addressing energy and climate education
He leads the DUST Center’s multidisciplinary efforts on hazardous dust mitigation in drylands and contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to clean water (SDG 6) and affordable renewable energy (SDG 7).
