Haynes’s research explores the intersections of race, space, and identity. His ethnographic and historical methodologies illuminate how racial classification shapes urban communities and religious belonging. He is particularly known for his groundbreaking work on Black Jews in America, challenging the dominant narrative of whiteness in Jewish identity. His interest in urban sociology extends to the study of ghettos, gentrification, and middle-class Black suburbs, providing nuanced critiques of racial and spatial dynamics.
Haynes’s recent publications reflect a diverse and interdisciplinary trajectory, combining sociological memoir, religious studies, and critical engagement with technology. His articles reveal consistent themes: the structural nature of racial inequality, the complexity of racial identity, and the historical forces shaping urban life. From analyses of the Harlem ghetto to explorations of algorithmic racism, his work connects personal narratives with broader social structures.
