Bruce Carruthers

Bruce Carruthers is the John D. MacArthur Professor of Sociology at Northwestern University's Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of Chicago (1991) and has been a faculty member at Northwestern since 1990, serving as department chair (2004–2006) and director of the Buffett Institute for Global Studies (2015–2018). His work focuses on comparative sociology, economy-society relations, and the sociology of law and organizations.

Research interests include institutional foundations of long-term decision-making, corporate social responsibility, and the sociological analysis of credit, finance, and markets. Carruthers has authored/co-authored six books, including Bankrupt (2009) and The Economy of Promises (2022). He has held fellowships at institutions like the Radcliffe Institute (Harvard), the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, and the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study.

His publications span topics from financial crises to museum practices, emphasizing the interplay between law, governance, and economic structures. Awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship (2006–07) and membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2024).

Carruthers teaches courses on economic sociology, comparative historical methods, and law-markets globalization. His research also examines the impact of 'big data' on credit markets and the historical evolution of trust mechanisms in financial systems.
