Bruce Boyden is an Associate Professor of Law at the Marquette University School of Law, specializing in copyright law, privacy law, intellectual property, civil procedure, and legal history. He teaches courses such as Privacy Law, Copyrights, and Internet Law, and his research examines how legal frameworks evolve with technological and societal changes. Before joining Marquette, he served as a visiting professor at Washington & Lee University School of Law and Michigan State University College of Law, and practiced at Proskauer Rose LLP, focusing on copyright, privacy, and digital rights.
Boyden holds a J.D. from Yale Law School, where he was Notes Editor of the Yale Law Journal and an Editor of the Yale Journal of Law & Feminism. He also earned an M.A. in History from Northwestern University and a B.A. summa cum laude in History and Philosophy from the University of Arkansas. His current research explores minimal creativity for selections under copyright law.
His publications span topics such as generative AI and IP law, copyright evolution, privacy erosion in digital contexts, and legal challenges in emerging technologies. Notable works include The Grapes of Roth (2024) and Games and Other Uncopyrightable Systems (2011). His scholarship bridges historical legal analysis with modern technological dilemmas.
Professionally, Boyden is a member of the New York and Wisconsin bars. His expertise is reflected in his roles as an academic, legal practitioner, and scholar, contributing to both theoretical and applied aspects of law in the digital age.
