Brooke Covington is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Christopher Newport University (CNU), serving as Academic Director of the Center for Community Engagement. Her work bridges rhetoric, medical humanities, and public memory studies. She holds a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Writing from Virginia Tech, along with an MA and BA in English from James Madison University.
Her research focuses on materiality, public memorials, rhetorical theory, and archives. Notable projects include analyzing Confederate monuments in Isle of Wight County and exploring counterstorytelling in anti-racist pedagogies. She investigates how narratives shape understandings of trauma, ethics, and healthcare.
Recent publications span topics like biomedical decision-making, memorial rhetoric, and podcasting as anti-racist tools. Covington's work often addresses marginalized voices in public discourse and healthcare contexts. She received the HuMetricsHss Community Fellowship from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Her teaching emphasizes civic engagement through writing, professional communication, and medical humanities. Covington collaborates with community organizations to connect academic research with public initiatives, particularly around memorialization and health narratives.
