Bronwen Dyson

Bronwen Dyson is a Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of English and Writing at the University of Sydney, where she specializes in second language acquisition, Processability Theory, and academic writing pedagogy. Her work bridges applied linguistics, cognitive science, and speech pathology.

Educational Background:

• MA in English from the University of Sydney
• PhD from the University of Western Sydney (UWS)

Research Interests: Bronwen’s interdisciplinary research focuses on two strands: (1) the social context of language acquisition, including doctoral writing curriculum, language policy, and AI’s role in teaching academic honesty, and (2) cognitive aspects of language acquisition through Processability Theory, examining grammatical development in second language learners and its applications for treating aphasia. She collaborates internationally with institutions like the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) and Massey University (NZ).

Projects & Collaborations: Current initiatives include the national/international project Writing Artificial Intelligence and Authorship (with the University of Queensland and others), Doctoral coursework as a compass (a sole-author project), and Language support vs. language development (with G. Ramia). She also co-leads research on First language loss in aphasia at the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre.

Teaching & Supervision: Bronwen coordinates three HDR thesis writing units (WRIT5001, WRIT5002, WRIT5003) and has taught interdisciplinary courses like FASS3999. She supervises five HDR students, including Amelia MEIDHIATININGSIH’s longitudinal study of English development in Indonesian students and Rudi SUHERMAN’s case study on genre-based pedagogy in Indonesian high schools.

Associations: Bronwen is a member of the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies, the Association of Academic Language and Learning, and the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia. She collaborates with international research groups, including the International Symposium on Processability Approaches to Language Acquisition and the Artificial Intelligence and Authorship consortium.
