Dr. Brodie Waddell is Reader in Early Modern History at Birkbeck, University of London, specializing in English social and economic history from 1550-1750. His research examines how ordinary people navigated social, political and economic challenges through practices like petitioning, record-keeping, and community welfare systems.
As Principal Investigator of the AHRC-funded project 'The Power of Petitioning in Seventeenth-Century England', Waddell analyzes thousands of historical petitions to map communication between rulers and ruled. His work also explores poverty, taxation, and regulation through local magistrate petitions.
He teaches courses on early modern history, historical research skills, and popular voices in history. Waddell serves as Director of Education for History, Classics and Archaeology and edits the journal Cultural and Social History.
