Brittany L. Butler

Brittany L. Butler serves as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry within ETSU's School of Science, Engineering, and Math, with additional roles as Faculty Fellow at the Center for Teaching Excellence and Faculty Advisor for the Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society.

Education:

Dr. Butler's research pioneers leadership development in chemistry education through her C.H.E.M. Leaders program, which evaluates essential skills training outside traditional curricula. She actively investigates science identity formation in STEM, equity-focused teaching practices, and strategies to dismantle classroom inclusion barriers. Her scholarship manifests in conference presentations addressing reflective pedagogy and inclusive engagement techniques that foster student success in challenging chemistry courses.

Professional Engagement: Dr. Butler advises the Chemistry Club while advancing institutional teaching excellence through her CTE fellowship. She actively contributes to diversity initiatives via ETSU's Black Faculty and Staff Association and national organizations including ACS and NOBCChE, connecting classroom practice to broader STEM equity efforts.

Program Leadership: The C.H.E.M. Leaders program represents her innovative approach to developing chemistry students' professional skills, complementing her teaching philosophy that emphasizes accessibility, relevance to future careers, and the strategic use of humor to lower barriers in chemical education.
