Dr. Britta Schilling is Associate Professor of Cultural History at Utrecht University’s Department of History and Art History within the College of Humanities. Her research focuses on cultural memory, legacies of empire, and everyday experiences under colonialism. She has held prestigious fellowships, including the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship and NWO Aspasia Grant.

Schilling’s publications explore topics such as colonial architecture, material culture, street naming controversies, and Cold War-era European interventions. She supervises MA and PhD students, particularly in postcolonial and imperial history, with former advisees pursuing doctorates at institutions like the University of Toronto and Humboldt-Universität Berlin.
Her recent work includes the Beyond the Bungalow crowdsourcing project and the Bitterzoete Route initiative, which re-examines colonial street names in Utrecht. She is actively involved in public engagement, media commentary, and community-based educational projects.
