Britta Anderson is an Assistant Professor of Spanish with specializations in Border Studies and Latinx Studies at Texas Tech University's Classical & Modern Languages & Literatures department. Originally from Albuquerque, NM, she joined Texas Tech's faculty in 2019 after completing her Ph.D. at Washington University in St. Louis in 2016. Her academic appointment bridges Spanish language and literature with interdisciplinary approaches to border theory and Latinx cultural production.
Dr. Anderson's research focuses on contemporary Latinx and Mexican cultural production through the lenses of gender, performance, and border studies. She investigates how state and corporate systems extend border logic beyond the geopolitical border into spaces like highways, prisons, and factories. Her work examines the performances, public art, and literature that respond to these bordering practices, with particular attention to how marginalized communities navigate and resist these structures. She has developed innovative frameworks including what she terms a 'Latinx poetics of illegibility' through which authors undermine identitarian labels.
Her scholarly output demonstrates a clear trajectory focusing on border representation beyond hybridity, feminist and queer performance, and autohistoria-teoría as methodology. Recent publications analyze works by Yuri Herrera, Chicana feminist traditions, and collaborative performance art on the U.S.-Mexico border wall. Her work frequently engages with themes of embodiment, mobility, and resistance across physical and conceptual borders.
As an educator, Dr. Anderson teaches courses on U.S. Latinx Literature, Border Studies, Latin American Film, and Cultures of the Spanish Speaking World. Her pedagogical approach emphasizes hands-on participation, community engagement, connections between local and global processes, and student well-being. She incorporates diverse materials including podcasts, music, recipes, film, poetry, and testimony into her teaching.
