BrieAnna Langlie

BrieAnna Langlie is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Binghamton University, where she directs the Laboratory of Ancient Food and Farming (LAFF). Her research focuses on paleoethnobotany and Andean archaeology, particularly the sustainability of agricultural systems and foodways in the pre-Hispanic Andes. She holds a PhD from Washington University in St. Louis. Langlie's work emphasizes the co-evolution of humans, plants, and landscapes, with a specialization in ancient agricultural terraces and crop domestication in the Andes Mountains.

Her research projects include the Altiplano Agriculture and Communities Project, examining monumental field systems and their relationship to climate change and social complexity. She collaborates with the Collasuyo Archaeological Research Institute (CARI) in Peru and has published widely in journals like Journal of Anthropological Archaeology and Vegetation History and Archaeobotany. Langlie teaches courses on Andean civilizations, archaeological methods, and paleoethnobotany.

Langlie’s lab is equipped with advanced microscopy and GIS tools for analyzing plant residues. She actively mentors graduate students in the MA and PhD programs in anthropology. Her recent SPARC award supports data analytics in archaeological studies. She also engages in community projects like the Three Sisters Garden collaboration with the Onondaga Nation.
