Bridgette Kirkpatrick is a Professor at Collin College, actively engaged in the Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program. She serves as the primary instructor for multiple course sections focused on phage discovery and genomic analysis, including both laboratory-based (in situ) and computational (in silico) components.
Her research and teaching interests center on phage genomics, bioinformatics, microbiology, biotechnology, genetics, and molecular biology. She has guided students in isolating and characterizing bacteriophages using various bacterial hosts such as Mycobacterium smegmatis, Gordonia rubripertincta, Microbacterium foliorum, and Arthrobacter globiformis. Her courses have consistently provided hands-on research experiences to undergraduate students, primarily freshmen and sophomores.
Dr. Kirkpatrick has mentored numerous students across multiple semesters, with class sizes ranging from 4 to 18. She typically teaches courses that meet twice a week for 2 to 6.5 hours, depending on the course content and level. Her dedication to undergraduate research education is evident in her long-standing participation in the SEA-PHAGES program since 2016.
She is an integral part of the SEA-PHAGES network, collaborating with educators and researchers nationwide to advance phage genomics education and contribute to the scientific community's understanding of bacteriophages.
