Bridget Keown is a Teaching Professor in the Gender, Sexuality, & Women's Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh, affiliated with the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. She holds a PhD in World History from Northeastern University, an MA in Imperial and Commonwealth History from King's College London, and a BA in History and Russian Literature from Smith College. Her research focuses on war trauma among British/Irish women during WWI and the Irish War of Independence, the history of kinship among LGBTQ+ communities during the AIDS crisis in the US and Ireland, and intersections of postcolonial queer theory and performance. She co-chairs the Memory Studies Association’s Gender and Memory Working Group and serves on the Executive Council of the American Conference for Irish Studies.
Her scholarship explores how trauma shapes historical narratives, including analysis of suffragette memoirs, women’s wartime writings, and queer health activism. She contributes to public history platforms like Nursing Clio and Lady Science, bridging academic research with broader cultural discourse.
