Bridget Hegarty is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Case School of Engineering, Case Western Reserve University. Her research focuses on understanding and engineering microbiomes in built environments, with applications to air quality, drinking water treatment, wastewater systems, and AI-driven environmental solutions.
- Investigates viral and fungal communities in engineered systems like homes, water pipes, and constructed wetlands
- Develops bacteriophage-based technologies for controlling pathogens in drinking water
- Uses machine learning for environmental health applications
The INHALE Study led by Dr. Hegarty explores how low-cost home interventions can improve asthma outcomes in children, funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Her work bridges environmental engineering with microbiology, emphasizing metagenomics and metatranscriptomics tools.
Collaborations include partnerships with the University of Toronto, Cleveland Clinic, and Environmental Health Watch. The Hegarty Lab trains students in interdisciplinary research combining environmental science, microbiology, and computational methods.
