Brian A. Wandell is the Isaac and Madeline Stein Family Professor at Stanford University, affiliated with the Department of Psychology and courtesy appointments in Electrical Engineering, Ophthalmology, and the Graduate School of Education. He directs the Center for Cognitive and Neurobiological Imaging and served as Deputy Director of the Wu Tsai Neuroscience Institute (2013-2021).
- Education:
- B.S. in Mathematics and Psychology, University of Michigan (1973)
- Ph.D. in Social Science, University of California at Irvine (1977)
- Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Pennsylvania
Wandell’s research bridges visual neuroscience and image system engineering. His lab uses functional, structural, and quantitative MRI to study visual processing, brain reorganization after injury, and cortical development during reading acquisition. In digital imaging, he co-founded the Stanford Center for Image Systems Engineering and developed tools like ISETCam for camera design and Flywheel.io for reproducible medical imaging analysis.
His work spans software development for neuroscience and industrial applications, including collaborations with Silicon Valley companies and open-source initiatives. Key themes include brain plasticity, computational modeling, and medical imaging technologies.
- Scientific Awards:
- Troland Research Award (1986)
- Edridge Green Medal (1997)
- Tillyer Prize (2008)
- Proctor Medal (2021-2022)
- Elected to US National Academy of Sciences (2003)
Wandell’s teaching integrates perception, neuroscience, and engineering, with contributions to public science communication and the textbook Foundations of Vision. His lab’s tools serve institutions, hospitals, and AI development teams globally.
