Brian Van Wyck serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), with an affiliate appointment in the School of Public Policy. Holding a Ph.D. from Michigan State University, he specializes in the historical intersection of migration, education, and identity formation.
His research centers on Turkish migration to West Germany, examining how educational and religious institutions shaped concepts of race, Islam, and belonging from the 1960s onward. Key areas include migrant knowledge production, imam-teacher dynamics, and state policies affecting Turkish-origin communities. His work reveals how West German integration efforts simultaneously reflected and constructed social hierarchies.
Analysis of his recent publications shows consistent focus on educational frameworks within migrant communities, transnational identity negotiation, and post-war European integration challenges. Articles increasingly incorporate comparative religious studies and critical race theory perspectives.
