Brian Tang serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Atmospheric & Environmental Sciences within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University at Albany. He holds a PhD in Atmospheric Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2010) and dual Bachelor of Science degrees from UCLA (2004) in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and Applied Mathematics with a specialization in Computing.
Dr. Tang's research primarily focuses on tropical cyclones (hurricanes), including their formation processes, intensity changes, organization of cloud clusters, effects of vertical wind shear, rapid intensification mechanisms, and interactions with midlatitude weather systems. His secondary research area examines severe weather phenomena and associated hazards in the northeastern United States, with particular attention to how terrain influences severe thunderstorms and how well weather models represent these complex interactions. He also investigates meteorological factors that can alter the risk of severe weather events, including large hail and heavy rainfall.
Through his active presence on social media and professional platforms, Dr. Tang demonstrates ongoing engagement with current weather events, tropical cyclone developments, and severe weather forecasting challenges. His professional activities include teaching atmospheric science courses and contributing to the meteorological community through research and public communication about high-impact weather events.
