Brian T. Edwards serves as Dean of Tulane University’s School of Liberal Arts and holds a joint faculty appointment as Professor of English and Middle East & North African Studies. He leads one of Tulane’s largest schools, overseeing 35 departments, interdisciplinary programs, and cultural initiatives including the New Orleans Shakespeare Festival and the Tulane Global Humanities Research Center. His academic focus includes cultural-political intersections, global port cities, and American cultural circulation in the Middle East.
Edwards earned his BA, MA, MPhil, and PhD in American Studies from Yale University. His research explores Moroccan cultural dynamics, U.S.-Middle East relations, and postcolonial studies, reflected in publications like After the American Century. He has received major grants from the Carnegie Corporation and Andrew Mellon Foundation, and was named a 2013 Chicago Council Emerging Leader.
Administratively, Edwards prioritizes equity, global education, and community engagement. He expanded interdisciplinary programs like Environmental Studies and Native American Studies, and initiated innovative language initiatives connecting Tulane with local communities. His current projects include a global port cities study and a Tangier-focused memoir.
Awarded for his leadership, Edwards advocates for the liberal arts’ role in preparing students for global challenges. He collaborates across disciplines and universities, fostering partnerships between Tulane’s schools of Liberal Arts, Medicine, and Science.
