Brian Scholtens is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the College of Charleston, based in the Rita Hollings Science Center (Office 211, Lab 268) at 58 Coming Street. He teaches undergraduate courses including Evolution, Form and Function of Organisms (BIOL 112), Honors Biology (BIOL 152), Biodiversity, Ecology and Conservation Biology (BIOL 211), and Entomology (BIOL 338).
His educational background:
- B.A. from Central College
- M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan
Dr. Scholtens' research centers on plant-insect interactions and the faunistics and systematics of Lepidoptera, with fieldwork spanning Sapelo Island (Georgia) and Congaree National Park. His work integrates entomology, biodiversity assessment, and conservation biology to document moth and butterfly diversity across North American ecosystems.
His publication record reveals consistent contributions to Lepidoptera taxonomy since 2013, with recent focus on comprehensive checklists for Pyralidae and Crambidae families. Current projects examine plant-insect networks in dune ecosystems and biodiversity patterns in protected areas.
Professional recognition includes:
- President of The Lepidopterists’ Society (2017-2019)
- President of South Carolina Entomological Society (2015-2016)
Dr. Scholtens' laboratory (Lab 268) supports collaborative research on insect systematics, frequently partnering with institutions nationwide for biodiversity surveys and taxonomic studies.
