Brian S. Kim

Brian S. Kim, MD, is a Professor of Dermatology and Immunology & Immunotherapy at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He serves as Vice Chair of Research, Site Chair of Morningside and Mount Sinai West, and Director of the Mark Lebwohl Center for Neuroinflammation and Sensation. His research focuses on neuroimmune interactions in skin disorders, particularly chronic itch and inflammation. Dr. Kim holds joint appointments in the Precision Immunology Institute and Friedman Brain Institute.

Education: MD from University of Washington School of Medicine (AOA), MTR from Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Postdoctoral training at the HHMI-NIH with Dr. Stephen I. Katz and later under Dr. David Artis.

Research Interests: Dr. Kim investigates how immune responses interact with sensory neurons to regulate inflammation and sensation. His lab bridges basic science (innate immunity, neuroimmunology) with translational research, including clinical trials for atopic dermatitis and prurigo nodularis. Recent discoveries include JAK inhibitors for chronic pruritus and mechanisms involving Piezo1 channels.

Publications & Awards: Over 180 peer-reviewed articles in Cell, Nature, and Science. NIH grants, Allen Discovery Center funding, and multiple awards including the American Dermatological Association Young Leadership Award (2019) and induction into the American Society for Clinical Investigation (2022).

Industry & Leadership: Co-founder of Alys Pharmaceuticals. Serves on advisory boards for Attovia Therapeutics, Triveni Bio, and others. Holds equity in biotech companies and leads clinical trials at the Kim Lab, which also runs the T32 Research Training Program in Systems Skin Biology.

Clinical Affiliations: Mount Sinai Morningside, Beth Israel, Brooklyn, Queens, and The Mount Sinai Hospital. Specializes in atopic dermatitis, chronic itch, and hives management.
