Dr. Brian Peterson is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Park Management & Conservation at Kansas State University. His work focuses on integrating social, spatiotemporal, geographic, and ecological data to study human behavior in parks and protected areas, aiming to enhance sustainable management practices. He has conducted research in iconic locations like Grand Canyon National Park, Mammoth Cave National Park, and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Dr. Peterson earned his Ph.D. in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management from Clemson University (2020), an M.S. from the University of Utah (2016), and a B.A. in Biology from the University of San Diego (2004). He currently leads the Applied Park Science Lab and serves on the board of the George Wright Society, organizing annual student summits to foster publication opportunities.
His grants include projects on recreation displacement in Southern California forests (US Forest Service) and aircraft tracking over National Park Service units (NPS/FAA collaboration). Key research themes include wildfire displacement strategies, overflight noise impacts, and spatial analysis for park management. He emphasizes data-driven solutions to balance visitor enjoyment with ecological and cultural preservation.
