Dr. Brian Merkel is a Professor and Chair of Human Biology at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, with a 28-year tenure teaching immunology, advanced microbiology, and public health-related courses. He serves as a pre-health advisor for human biology and biology students and advises UW-Green Bay’s chapter of the national biological honor society, Tri-Beta.
- Education: Ph.D. (1994) from Virginia Commonwealth University; B.S. (1989) from the University of Richmond.
His research focuses on the effects of environmental toxicants and herbal supplements on immune function, using cell, animal, and human models. He emphasizes mentorship, advising students to build relationships with faculty, avoid being "academic victims," and embrace criticism as growth opportunities.
Dr. Merkel also teaches medical students through the Medical College of Wisconsin-Green Bay partnership, enhancing his mentoring and teaching skills. He is passionate about fostering student success and views students as "wealth," reflecting his commitment to their development beyond academics.
Outside work, he enjoys smallmouth bass fishing, food, music, and spending time with family.
