Brian M. Hoffman is a Professor at Northwestern University, with dual appointments in the Department of Chemistry and Department of Molecular Biosciences. He holds the Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Chair in Chemistry and is affiliated with the Interdisciplinary Biological Sciences Graduate Program (IBiS) and Chemistry of Life Processes Institute.
- Education: PhD from California Institute of Technology, BS from University of Chicago
Research Focus: Dr. Hoffman specializes in electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) spectroscopy to study metalloenzyme catalytic mechanisms. His work spans:
- Nitrogenase's N2 reduction to NH3
- Radical SAM enzyme-mediated H-atom transfer
- Copper methane monooxygenase for greenhouse gas mitigation
- In vivo Mn2+ speciation in biological systems
- Biomimetic complex studies of Jahn-Teller systems
Scientific Achievements: Recipient of American Institute of Chemists Gold Medal (2022), National Academy of Sciences membership, and Zavoisky Prize (2007). His group's publications show expertise in bioinorganic chemistry, electron transfer, and catalytic intermediate characterization.
Collaborations: Works with researchers including Thomas V. O'Halloran, Lance Seefeldt, William E. Broderick, and Fraser MacMillan. The Hoffman Group maintains subgroups in Electron Transfer and ENDOR Spectroscopy.
