Brian Louis Calliou serves as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary, bringing extensive experience in Indigenous legal frameworks, leadership development, and community economic initiatives. His academic journey includes an LLM in Legal History/Indigenous Law, an LLB, and a BA in Political Science, all from the University of Alberta.
Dr. Calliou's research focuses on Indigenous Law, Indigenous Economic Development, Indigenous Leadership, and Restorative Justice, with particular emphasis on the Indigenous legal profession, governance models, and community economic development strategies. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications through the development of the Wise Practices model for Indigenous leadership training.

Dr. Calliou teaches LAW 579 Residential Schools Litigation and LAW 693 Law and Indigenous Economic Development, courses that directly engage with the historical and contemporary legal challenges facing Indigenous peoples in Canada.
As a member of the Sucker Creek First Nation in northern Alberta, Dr. Calliou brings both academic expertise and lived experience to his work, having previously served as Program Director of Indigenous Leadership Programs at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity from 2003 to 2021.
