Professor Brian Key is a leading neurophilosopher at the University of Queensland, affiliated with the School of Biomedical Sciences and the Centre for Innovation in Pain and Health Research (CIPHeR). With over 25 years of experience, he has focused on molecular and cellular mechanisms of brain development and regeneration using fish, frogs, and mice as model organisms.
His groundbreaking work demonstrated how to genetically construct novel axon tracts in embryonic brains, addressing what he terms "the easy problem." Currently, he investigates "the hardest problem"—how the brain experiences subjective feelings—through collaborations with Professor Deborah Brown (Philosophy, UQ). They propose the inference machine framework, suggesting hierarchical neural models generate awareness antecedent to feelings. This has led to influential conclusions that fish and molluscs lack the neural architecture to feel pain.
His 15 most recent articles (2016–2025) explore consciousness, pain, and neural design across Zebrafish, insects, and plants. Trends include debunking pain in aquatic animals, challenging sentience in invertebrates, and redefining biological cognition through computational models.
Supervision includes advising PhD candidates on topics like "Towards closure of the fish pain debate" and "Genetic networks in neural circuit formation." Current and completed projects emphasize multi-agent reasoning and neurophilosophical analysis in animal welfare decisions.
