Brian Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Entomology and Nematology at the University of California, Davis. His research focuses on animal behavior, evolution, theoretical biology, and genomics, with a particular emphasis on social insects and self-organizing systems. He leads the Johnson Lab, located in 383 Briggs Hall.
Education: PhD in Behavioral Biology from Cornell University and BS in Ecology, Behavior and Evolution from UC San Diego.
Teaching includes courses on Fundamental Animal Behavior, Special Study, and Agricultural Entomology & Bees. His research explores mechanisms of social organization in eusocial species, including the role of novel genes and self-organizing processes in colony fitness optimization. He has proposed integrative frameworks for understanding division of labor and superorganism evolution, with future work targeting novel hypotheses from his conceptual syntheses.
