Brian J. Reiser is the Orrington Lunt Professor of Learning Sciences at Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy. His work focuses on designing science curricula that foster authentic scientific practices like explanation, argumentation, and inquiry. Reiser leads initiatives such as NextGen Science Storylines and the OpenSciEd Consortium, developing storyline-based instructional materials. He has contributed to national education frameworks like the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and served on the National Research Council’s Board on Science Education (2011–2018).
- Education: PhD in Cognitive Science (Yale, 1983), MA in Psychology (NYU, 1979), BA in Psychology (UPenn, 1977)
- Leadership: Founded Northwestern’s Learning Sciences graduate program and chaired it until 2001
Reiser’s research emphasizes scaffolding learning environments to support scientific inquiry and teacher professional development. His work bridges research and practice through collaborative projects with states and districts, focusing on equitable implementation of NGSS-aligned curricula. Recent projects include freely available open-source science materials for grades 6–8, with ongoing K–5 and high school extensions.
Research Interests: Curricular design for scientific practices, classroom social dynamics, software tools for inquiry, and teacher learning through curriculum enactment.
- Awards: Elected to National Academy of Education (2021), Fellow of the International Society of the Learning Sciences (2021), Fellow of the American Educational Research Association (2021)
His work in OpenSciEd and NextGen Science Storylines emphasizes student agency and coherence in science learning, with a focus on making curricula adaptable to diverse classroom needs. Reiser’s publications address scaffolding theory, epistemic agency, and the integration of crosscutting science concepts.
