Brian Hollis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences, University of South Carolina. He leads the Hollis Lab, which focuses on experimental evolutionary genetics using Drosophila melanogaster and other model organisms. His research examines how sexual selection and sexual conflict influence adaptation and sexual dimorphism.
Research interests include:
- Evolutionary constraints and facilitators of adaptation
- Genomic foundations of sexual selection
- Experimental evolution in controlled environments
- Phenotypic and genomic analysis of sex differences
The lab employs real-time tracking of replicated populations in manipulated environments to directly test evolutionary theories, often yielding unexpected insights. Current projects investigate mating behavior genetics, reproductive isolation, and social experience effects.
Dr. Hollis mentors multiple students across PhD, graduate, and undergraduate levels. The lab maintains active outreach programs including:
- Middle school genetics education at Meadow Glen
- Evolutionary biology courses in the Galapagos Islands
