Brian Harnetty is a Professor of Composition at The Ohio State University, where he bridges musicology, sound studies, and socially engaged art. His work focuses on sonic ethnography, particularly in Appalachian Ohio, using sound archives to explore the intersection of place, memory, and social change.

Harnetty’s research centers on sonic ethnography, integrating archival recordings with contemporary compositions. His projects, such as Shawnee, Ohio and Forest Listening Rooms, examine the environmental and social histories of Appalachian communities, often collaborating with local residents to co-author sonic narratives.
His accolades include the ABOG Fellowship for Contemplative Practice (2018), MAP Fund Grants (2020, 2021), and MOJO Magazine’s Underground Album of the Year (2013, 2019). His music labels include Dust-to-Digital, Atavistic, and Scioto Records.
