Brian H. Lower is a Professor at The Ohio State University, holding appointments in the School of Environment and Natural Resources and School of Earth Sciences. He earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Virginia Tech (2001) and a B.S. in Zoology (minor in Geography) from Kent State University (1995). His professional journey includes a postdoctoral associate role at Virginia Tech (2001-2004), senior scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (2004-2008), and faculty roles at Ohio State since 2008.
Dr. Lower’s research focuses on Environmental Mineralogy & Chemistry and Environmental Microbiology, with a particular emphasis on magnetotactic bacteria, biomineralization, and mineral-microbe interactions. His work bridges biophysics, nanochemistry, and microbial ecology, exploring how bacteria manipulate magnetic fields and interact with environmental surfaces.
The 15 most recent articles highlight his work on magnetotactic bacterial behavior, protein-mediated mineral synthesis, online science education, and biochar impacts on soil ecosystems. These publications span disciplines including biophysics, microbiology, nanotechnology, and environmental engineering.
- 2007 Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Outstanding Performance Award
- 2009 Virginia Tech CALS Outstanding Recent Alumni Award
- 2014–2017: Multiple teaching awards including Ohio State Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching
- 2016 APLU-USDA Excellence in College and University Teaching Award
As a Principal Investigator, Dr. Lower secures research grants from the National Science Foundation and Department of Energy. His laboratory investigates magnetosome formation, biofilm mechanics, and environmental nanotechnology, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams in geosciences and biomedical engineering.
