Brian H. Greenwald is a Professor of History and Director of the Drs. John S. & Betty J. Schuchman Center at Gallaudet University. His research focuses on Deaf history, including the intersections of eugenics, medicine, and education in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He has co-edited two seminal books: In Our Own Hands: Essays in Deaf History, 1870-1970 and A Fair Chance in the Race of Life: The Role of Gallaudet University in Deaf History. He also secured a NEH grant to document Deaf New Yorkers’ experiences across race, generational, and geographic divides. His work emphasizes the lived experiences of Deaf individuals in urban environments.
He holds a PhD and resides in Annapolis, Maryland, with his family. The Schuchman Deaf Documentary Center (SDDC), under his direction, archives and shares Deaf histories through digital platforms. The SDDC is active on social media (@DeafDocCenter).
