Brian G. Mohney

Dr. Brian G. Mohney is a Professor of Ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine with a primary appointment as Consultant in the Department of Ophthalmology and a joint appointment as Consultant in the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine. He serves as the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Fellowship Director and is Chair of the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group.

Dr. Mohney completed his medical degree at Texas A&M University College of Medicine in 1990, followed by an internal medicine internship at Oregon Health and Science University, ophthalmology residency at Mayo Clinic, and pediatric ophthalmology fellowship at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

His research focuses on pediatric eye disorders, particularly childhood strabismus, blocked tear ducts, intermittent exotropia, amblyopia, and the genetic basis of eye misalignment. He has studied the genetic makeup of more than 20 families with ocular misalignment disorders. His clinical expertise includes pediatric eye conditions, adult strabismus, and surgical management of eye alignment disorders.

Dr. Mohney's extensive publication record shows consistent contributions to understanding the epidemiology, risk factors, and treatment outcomes for various pediatric eye conditions. His recent work (2023-2025) continues to explore population-based studies of pediatric eye disorders, genetic factors in strabismus, and innovative approaches to diagnosing and managing childhood eye conditions.

As an active educator, Dr. Mohney serves on the Ophthalmology residency selection committee and as the Mayo medical student liaison for research. His leadership in the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group demonstrates his commitment to advancing clinical research in pediatric ophthalmology through multi-center studies.

Dr. Mohney leads the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group research team, which conducts population-based studies and clinical trials focused on pediatric eye disorders. His work has significantly contributed to understanding the incidence, risk factors, and optimal management strategies for conditions like intermittent exotropia, nasolacrimal duct obstruction, and other common pediatric eye problems.
