Brian Elbel is Professor of Population Health and Health Policy at New York University (NYU) Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He leads the Section on Health Choice, Policy and Evaluation within the Department of Population Health and serves as Associate Dean, Research Mission at NYU Langone Health.
- Education: B.A. from The University of Texas at Austin; MPH and PhD in Health Policy/Health Economics from Yale University.
Dr. Elbel investigates how policies and environmental factors influence health behaviors and outcomes, focusing on obesity, chronic diseases, and social determinants. His work employs statistical and econometric methods with diverse datasets (e.g., administrative records, sales data) to evaluate interventions like calorie labeling, sugary beverage taxes, school food policies, and supermarket incentives. He has also studied health disparities in New York City’s public school children during the COVID-19 pandemic.
His research is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, National Science Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, New York State Health Foundation, and Aetna Foundation.
Dr. Elbel’s work has been featured in major media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, and Vox. He contributes to public health discourse through evaluations of place-based health initiatives and policy effectiveness.
