Brian Charles Chaboyer is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. He has been at Dartmouth since 1998, following postdoctoral fellowships at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics and the University of Arizona. His expertise spans stellar evolution, stellar populations, galaxy formation, and theoretical astrophysics, with a focus on metal-poor stars, globular clusters, and exoplanet host stars.
Chaboyer earned his B.Sc. from the University of Manitoba (1987), M.Sc. from Queen's University (1989), and Ph.D. from Yale University (1993). His research involves both theory and observations, including developing 2-D stellar evolution models, calibrating mixing-length theory, and analyzing Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Gaia mission data. Collaborators include Giuseppe Bono, Massimo Marengo, and Frédéric Thévenin. He co-developed the widely used Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database.
Teaching includes introductory astronomy courses for non-majors and advanced graduate seminars, as well as directing the astronomy foreign studies program in South Africa. He currently advises two Ph.D. students (Thomas Boudreaux and Martin Ying) and two undergraduates (Tal Sternberg and Renata Edaes Hoh). Past students include notable researchers such as Aaron Dotter and Erin O'Malley.
Chaboyer's work is supported by the Simons Foundation. His outreach activities include public talks and mentoring. He is a member of the American Astronomical Society and serves on the executive committee of the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT).
