Dr. Brian C. Parker serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mental Health Nursing and Community Wellness at MacEwan University, where he has been a faculty member since 2002. His clinical background as a Registered Nurse (RN) and Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) directly informs his academic work in psychiatric nursing education.
His educational background includes a PhD from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN), complemented by professional nursing credentials.
Dr. Parker's research program critically examines the integration of educational philosophy and pedagogy with technology-based learning tools in nursing education. He specializes in human patient simulation, interprofessional healthcare education, and mobile technology applications (particularly tablet computers) in psychiatric nursing curricula. His work investigates how power relations and social discourse influence simulation-based learning environments for adult nursing students.
His 2009-2012 publications in top nursing education journals reveal consistent methodological rigor through grounded theory and transformative learning frameworks. These works analyze pedagogical concepts like fading support mechanisms, deconstruction/reconstruction processes, and critical examinations of simulation within nursing pedagogy, establishing him as a significant contributor to evidence-based simulation education.
As lead investigator for MacEwan University's interdisciplinary tablet computer study and a key member of the University of Alberta's Interprofessional Simulation Research Team, Dr. Parker demonstrates active grant leadership in projects examining simulation-based learning for nursing-pharmacy collaborations and mobile teaching resources.
He actively participates in research teams advancing simulation pedagogy through interprofessional healthcare education initiatives and technology integration in nursing programs, with ongoing projects focusing on mobile learning applications and collaborative clinical training environments.
