Brian Button is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics at the UNC School of Medicine, with joint appointments in UNC Medicine and Biomedical Engineering. He holds a PhD from the University of Texas Medical Branch and focuses on the biophysical properties of mucus, the periciliary layer (PCL), and mucociliary clearance mechanisms. His research spans respiratory diseases like cystic fibrosis and chronic bronchitis, integrating experimental and computational approaches.
Research Interests:
- Mucus hydration and hyperconcentration in chronic lung diseases
- Biophysical interactions in SARS-CoV-2 infection
- Mechanosensitive ATP release in airway homeostasis
- Mucin dynamics and their role in pulmonary disorders
- Therapeutic strategies for mucociliary dysfunction
Recent Publications: His work explores mucus concentration-dependent pathophysiology, SARS-CoV-2 host factors, and mathematical models of airway regulation. Articles emphasize mucin hyperconcentration, mucociliary clearance, and climate impacts on respiratory health.
Collaborations: He works with teams at the Marsico Lung Institute and UNC Cystic Fibrosis Center, using techniques like optical coherence tomography and CRISPR screening.
