Dr. Brian Barger is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Population Health Sciences at Georgia State University's School of Public Health, affiliated with the Mark Chaffin Centers for Healthy Development and the Center for Leadership in Disability (a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities).
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, University of Georgia (2013)
- M.A. in Experimental Psychology, Western Kentucky University (2000)
- B.A. in History and Religious Studies, Western Kentucky University (2000)
- Peace Corps Volunteer, Chinese Language and Culture Training, P.R. China (2007)
Dr. Barger's research integrates epidemiological, psychometric, and health service methodologies to investigate early identification pathways for children with social, emotional, and developmental disabilities. He specializes in community-based intervention connectivity, developmental monitoring systems, and racial/ethnic inequities in screening practices. His work bridges public health, disability studies, and education policy with significant implications for special education access.
He actively mentors graduate students through the Georgia LEND program and Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology training, serving on numerous thesis/dissertation committees. His research is funded by NIH, CDC, and Maternal and Child Health Bureau grants focused on autism spectrum disorders and developmental disparities.
Dr. Barger contributes to scholarly discourse as associate editor of Remedial and Special Education and editorial board member for Disability and Health Journal and Infants and Young Children. He serves as a national subject matter expert for CDC-NCBDDD task forces and NIH grant review panels.
