Brian Alters is a Professor at Chapman University, affiliated with both the Attallah College of Educational Studies and Schmid College of Science and Technology. He holds simultaneous appointments at McGill and Harvard Universities, serves as President of the National Center for Science Education, and was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). His work focuses on evolution education, science communication, and cross-cultural educational research.
Dr. Alters has secured over $3.255 million in funding, including an $8 million endowed Chair at McGill University. His research examines how students, particularly in community colleges and Islamic societies, understand evolution, and he has published extensively in journals like Nature Ecology & Evolution and Evolution: Education & Outreach. He also directs university R&D units and founded the Evolution Education Research Center.
Scientific awards include the McNeil Medal from the Royal Society of Canada and teaching/research awards from McGill and Chapman Universities. Dr. Alters has delivered over 300 talks worldwide, served as an expert witness in a major U.S. federal trial on science education, and co-authored six books. His media presence spans CNN, Nature, and Rolling Stone.
