Breton Langendorfer is a Lecturer in the Department of Art & Archaeology at Princeton University. He holds a master’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, where his dissertation examined connections between Assyrian palace reliefs and Mesopotamian mythological concepts of cosmic entropy. His current research focuses on early visual cultures of the Iranian plateau during the 3rd millennium B.C.E. and the symbolic use of repetition in Achaemenid royal art.
Before joining Princeton, he taught at Hamilton College, Brown University, and the University of New Hampshire. His expertise spans ancient Middle Eastern archaeology with a geographic focus on Iraq, Iran, and Central Asia. Langendorfer’s work bridges art historical analysis with mythological interpretation, emphasizing how visual motifs reflect broader cultural and philosophical frameworks.
He is affiliated with Princeton’s Art & Archaeology Department and maintains active research projects exploring the intersection of military iconography and mythological narratives in ancient Near Eastern art.
