Bret Flanders is a Professor in the Department of Physics at Kansas State University, currently on sabbatical leave. His research bridges soft matter nanotechnology and biological physics to develop novel bionic interfaces and physiological measurement techniques.

The Flanders Group pioneers the directed electrochemical nanowire assembly (DENA) technique, enabling precise growth of metallic and polymeric nanowires on microelectrode arrays. This approach facilitates non-invasive cellular adhesion studies where cells attach to nanowire tips rather than electrodes being forced onto cells. Current research demonstrates voltage-dependent cell-electrode residence times, with characteristic residence increasing proportionally to applied voltage—a critical finding for advancing bioelectronic devices.
His publication record reveals strong interdisciplinary integration across nanofabrication, biointerface engineering, and soft matter physics.
