Brent Stephens is a Professor of Architectural Engineering and the Arthur W. Hill Endowed Chair in Sustainability at Illinois Institute of Technology's Armour College of Engineering. He serves as Department Chair and Director of Environmental Engineering. His research focuses on indoor air quality, building energy efficiency, and exposure assessment. Stephens holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin (2012), an M.S.E. from the same institution (2009), and a B.S.E. from Tennessee Technological University (2007).
His research explores energy-efficient buildings, HVAC filtration systems, and the health impacts of indoor pollutants. Recent projects include improving air quality for veterans with COPD, evaluating smart building systems, and addressing urban stormwater equity. He leads the Built Environment Research Group at IIT.
Professional roles include Secretary of ISIAQ (2016-2020), ASHRAE leadership, and editorial contributions to the EPA’s air cleaner guides. Awards include ISIAQ Fellow (2024), IIT ASCE Professor Awards (2016, 2019), and the ASHRAE New Investigator Award (2015).
Funded projects span topics like air filtration efficacy, building energy retrofits, and wildfire smoke mitigation. His work bridges engineering, public health, and policy to address environmental challenges.
