Breno Bringel is a Brazilian-Spanish activist-scholar and Professor of Political Sociology at the Institute of Social and Political Studies (IESP) of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). He is also a Senior Fellow (Talento Investigador Programme) at the University Complutense de Madrid's Faculty of Political Science and Sociology. He has held visiting scholar positions across Latin America and Europe, including as Directeur d'études associé at the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'homme in Paris (2015) and François Chevallier Fellow at MIAS (2020). He served as President of the International Sociological Association's Research Committee on Social Movements (2018-2023) and currently leads the Latin American Sociological Association (ALAS). He edits the Global Dialogue magazine, published in 15 languages.
His research focuses on three main areas: contemporary activism and social movements, socioecological transitions, and the geopolitical and theoretical construction of Latin American thought. He actively participates in activist research initiatives and popular education, founding the Activist Research Group at CLACSO and serving on several boards including FASE and the Pacto Ecosocial del Sur.
Recent publications (2020–2023) analyze socioecological transitions, the geopolitical dimensions of activism, and Brazil’s political cycles under Bolsonaro. Key themes include decarbonization consensus, transnational solidarity networks, and pandemic impacts on social movements. His work bridges Latin American studies with global sociological theory, emphasizing critical perspectives on development and environmental justice.
