Brendan McConkey is an Associate Professor and Undergrad Advisor (Bioinformatics) at the University of Waterloo's Faculty of Science. He is cross-appointed with Chemical Engineering and the School of Computer Science, and affiliated with the UW Bioinformatics Research Group and the Waterloo Centre for Microbial Research.
His research integrates experimental and computational approaches to study proteomics and protein function, focusing on differential in-gel electrophoresis, mass spectrometry, and structural pattern recognition algorithms. Key areas include protein evolution, molecular genetics, biochemistry, and drug discovery.
Recent work involves: (1) proteomics analysis of plant-pathogen interactions, (2) computational modeling of protein structures, (3) evolutionary mapping of protein families, and (4) exploring microalgal compounds for antimicrobial applications. This aligns with his expertise in bioinformatics, systems biology, and microbial research.
Scientific Awards:
- 2012 Early Researcher Award, Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation
- 1999 W.B. Pearson Medal for creative thesis research (Biology), University of Waterloo
He has developed patents for anti-bacterial algae fatty acids and sterile methods. Teaching contributions include courses in bioinformatics, cell biology, and structural bioinformatics since 2014. He contributes to academic service through roles like Chair of the Science Statistics Review Committee.
